Ep41 - Changing Cultural Paradigms in Parenting Today
Being raised by immigrant parents is never easy. In this episode, we have a conversation with Registered Therapeutic Counsellor, Nashina Merani, on how she shattered cultural expectations and disrupted societal norms 20 years ago. Her life journey has not followed the chronological, cultural norms of what it means to be a “good brown girl,” resulting in a decades-long battle against shame, anxiety and feeling “not good enough.” We discuss how to prevent these cultural expectations from being placed on our children today, while keeping them rooted in who they are.
Be sure to listen for:
- The outdated cultural views of what it means to have a mental health disorder and the need for that to change
- How inauthentic roles and beliefs about ourselves form in childhood
- The reaction of her family and the society when she experienced an unplanned pregnancy at a young age
- How to break free from shame and the expectations that others place upon us
- What it means to be compassionate and accepting as parents today
- Nashina’s advice on how to stop living for society
